New Song : Fences : The Same Tattoos

On the surface, there’s really nothing special about Chris Mansfield. If you laid eye on him at a Gaslight Anthem show, it wouldn’t even register. But, when Mansfield straps on his singer/songwriter hat and assumes his position as the frontman for Fences, something very special happens. You’ll have to wait until September 28th (pre-order here) to judge for yourself, but I have no qualms calling their new self-titled full-length one of the strongest debuts I’ve heard in a long time, and one of the better records you’re likely to hear this year. Have a listen to The Same Tattoos and tell me I’m wrong.

More accessible than Mark Kozalek and less idiosyncratic than Mark Eitzel, Mansfield nonetheless shares their ability to express crippling levels of emotionality; however, Mansfield does it with an economy of words that borders on pathological. “Neither one of us will make it down this hill alive,” he drones on My Girl The Horse, with disturbing frankness. Mansfield’s band takes its name from the beloved August Wilson play, but it is far more significant that the record was produced by Sara Quin (yes, she of Tegan and Sara) who happened to come into possession of Fence’s debut recording, Ultimate Puke EP. Recorded in Victoria, B.C. in 10 long days, Fences is a rambunctious and earnest shot over the bow from an artist who seems equipped to one day be mentioned in the same breath as an Elliot Smith or the aforementioned Kozalek .

I love this track! Would never have guessed that it was the same guy from Gaslight Anthem. Can’t wait for the record to come out.

MP, Chris is not the same guy from Gaslight Anthem. They were saying if you saw him at a show, you wouldn’t look twice. These guys are not to be missed though, Fences is amazing.
