I’m guessing there are more musicians per square foot in Brooklyn than anywhere else in the world. Not a week passes here at MOKB in which we are not treated (or taunted) with at least a handful of acts who call BK home, some of whom are quite good. Repping the 718 today we have Kordan, a shadowy dream-pop trio that traces its origins back to Puerto Rico at the dawn of this new millennium. After building momentum from tours with Cut Copy, The Drums and The Mary Onettes, as well as from the buzz that accompanied the release of their Fantasy Nation EP, the band will attempt to cash in on this social capital on October 5th with their full-length debut, The Longing.
While Kordan isn’t doing anything groundbreaking, they do it very well, and it’s difficult to deny the appeal of Mirror’s percolating rhythms, washes of guitar and paranoid vocals. If the single is indicative of the the rest of The Longing, Kordan should be a no brainer for fans of 120 Minutes regulars like Luna, Lush and Ride, or even bands with multisyllabic handles like Swervedriver. My advice? Resist all temptation to read William Gibson’s Zero History and until you get The Longing. It seems those two things belong together.
