New Band Smell : The Migrant

The Migrant is the nom de guerre of Danish musician Bjarke Bendtsen, whose travels throughout the United States became the basis for his debut album, Travels In Lowland. Lead single The Organ Grinder starts innocently enough: gently strummed nylon strings and a plaintive voice that falls somewhere between Neil Young and Jason Molina, but gets a shot on the arm beginning with the second verse as a menagerie of instruments are thrown into the fray, with a resultant effect that is more than a little Arcade Fire-esque (how appropo). And just when it seems you couldn’t cram one more noisemaker into the mix, Bendtsen pulls the sonic equivalent of pulling the tablecloth, but sparing the place settings. All-in-all, it’s a hell of a song. Travels In Lowland will be available on September 21st, and if The Migrant really grabs you, keep your ear to the ground for news of a companion record, Amerika, due in the Spring of 2011.
