Chances are you wouldn’t know Paul Dempsey if you had to step over him on a New York City street, but in his native Australia, this guy is pretty much the cat’s pajamas. As the vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter for rock trio Something For Kate, Dempsey’s mantel is overburdened with awards, yet he remains basically an unknown commodity in the United States. So, he’s done what anyone in his position might: pack up the guitar, throw some clean underwear in a bag and set off to see if his solo debut will shine amid the bright lights.
Everything Is True, which has already been very warmly received back home, was co-produced by Paul and Wayne Connolly (Youth Group, You Am I) and mixed by Doug Bohem (Elliot Smith, French Kicks). Dempsey himself handles all performance duties, and MOKB is happy to offer a samples of his handiwork, Out The Airlock and Bats, the former of which I quite like. If you like what you hear, you might want to get yer butt to NYC this August, as Dempsey will be dropping his calling card to America via a month-long residency at NYC’s The Living Room.
