Truth be told, Pete Yorn is another one of those cats I never had much use for, but when Frank Black invites an artist to swing by and record some music, and those sessions blossom into a full-length album, I can’t help but take notice. Frank and Pete seem like the Oscar and Felix of rock if you ask me, but if Precious Stone, the opening track on Yorn’s forthcoming self-titled Vagrant release (available September 28th) is any indication, I may be forced to reconsider my current stance. Precious Stone is simple, but surprisingly good. Like much of his own recent output, Black has forgone accouterments in favor of unspoiled simplicity. Ragged guitars and rock-steady drumming provide spartan accompaniment to Yorn’s beat down delivery, and in this instance, less is so much more. And wait, is that a cover of Wheels by Gram Parsons on the album’s tracklist? Encouraging. Maybe Yorn should try hanging out with Dan Auerbach next.

This song rocks actually. The guitar tones are proper.
