New Song + Free EP + Tour Dates : Old 97’s : Rocks Off (Rolling Stones cover)

As the oppressive summer drags on, I find myself spending more time in the virtual world and rediscovering neglected records gathering dust in the corners of my music collection. Recently, I’ve gotten back in touch with Old 97’s 1997 breakthrough, Too Far To Care. Despite approaching two decades of steady high-quality output, Old 97’s have been dealt the misfortune of existing in the massive shadow cast by Wilco, yet, Rhett, his magnificent head of hair and the rest of the band carry on undeterred. There’s a new Old 97’s record on the horizon, but the band has plenty else to keep fans amused for the remainder of the summer. For starters there’s the Mimeograph EP, which is available digitally or physically at the band’s online store. Mimeograph consists of four cover tunes with no discernible unifying theme. Sure, their reading of Bowie’s Five Years is a headscratcher, but faithful (and lyrically enlightening) romps through Exile’s Rocks Off and REM’s Driver 8 are summer smilers to be sure.

Next, if you can muster up the energy to “Like” the Old 97s’ Facebook page, voila! They’ll pat you on the back to the tune of a free, digital three-song EP featuring live takes of St. Ignatius, Victoria and Four Leaf Clover. Summer mixed CD manna, and really, if you’ve already accepted friend requests from all of your high school lunch ladies, this is not going to kill you.

Finally, if you can turn off the computer and drag yourself off the couch, you might be able to catch Old 97’s live. Their summer tour is making stops in small and medium-sized cities across the Midwest. Just think, you can interact with real, live people and buy Mimeograph from the nice guy or gal working the merch table. I hear the sugar beets are blooming and Fargo is lovely this time of year.
