When something is called timeless, it is often because there are distinct touchstones that could be attributed to various decades of the past. Grand Rapids trio Major Murphy are just that to us, timeless. While we can’t specifically put our finger on it, when we listen to various songs in their catalog, we can’t help but get an emotional nostalgic pull the music we were exposed to by parents or older siblings early on in our life. Done in a genuine and thoughtful way, Major Murphy’s music isn’t derivative or trying to reinvent the wheel, which is why it tends to be so gratifying to us. The songs just seem to permeate around like a soft breeze, when playing.

Their latest EP, On & Off Again, and follow-up to the 2015 much-too-under-the-radar debut EP, Future Release, shows a band fully coming into their own both as musicians and stylistically. Each note on the six-song release is painted in gentle strokes first few numbers opening up into sharp rockers on “Mumbo Jumbo” and “Over Everything” only to bring it back down with the lullaby-like “Goochie’s Dream.” The EP really plays out like a complete circle and serves as a excellent appetizer to their debut full-length expected sometime in early 2018. Spin the EP below and be sure to grab a copy of the limited edition smoky cassette via their Bandcamp ahead of its release this Friday, July 15th, via Winspear Records.
