Back in 2009, El Michels Affair, an NYC instrumental/soul project featuring members of The Dap-Kings, The Menahan Street Band, and The Budos Band released a somewhat underground classic, a Wu-Tang Clan cover album entitled Enter the 37th Chamber. They apparently didn’t scratch that itch because they’re coming back with another one on April 14th. Return To The 37th Chamber will be the follow-up, and it is stacked with added talent. Lee Fields provides guest vocals on “Snakes” and “Tearz,” the latter of which also features Shannon Wise of The Shacks. Lady Wray also appears on the project’s version of Method Man’s “All I Need.”
Producer and bandleader Leon Michels recorded the album completely analog, sometimes hitting 6 generations of tape before it was ready for mixing, giving the Return to The 37th Chamber it’s own hazy sound. He’s also laced the album with many “psychedelic flourishes” – “John Carpenter” synths, heavy metal guitars, triumphant horns, and traditional Chinese instruments. You can order the album through Big Crown Records.
