Shannon Wise and Max Shrager (whom we recently highlighted here) are the primaries behind one of our favorite new acts of 2016, The Shacks. On October 7th, the New York City outfit will be releasing their self-titled debut EP through Big Crown Records. The EP contains nine songs in total with “Strange Boy” and “No Surprise,” both released as a recent 7″, acting as bonus tracks. Influences from soul, doo-wop, jazz, and reggae all bound together by the lo-fi sound flushed out by Shrager’s retro recording techniques.

While it is hard to pick a favorite from the collection, we found ourselves immediately charmed by the lovely “Left It with the Moon.” Not only does it elegantly capture Wise’s whispery vocal style, but it brings to mind moments sung by Binki Shapiro on Little Joy’s one and only album to date, an all-time favorite of ours. The warmth in the song is in a large part because of Shrager recording the song to a 4-track cassette at his home studio in Princeton, NJ. Listen below and pre-order the EP via Amazon and iTunes now.
