Indiana has a treasure trove of fantastic music and labels that goes largely unknown. Every year, the music scene and community get better and better. Both Secretly Canadian (along with their sub-labels Dead Oceans & Jagjaguwar) and Jurassic Pop in Bloomington and Lafayette respectively along with Asthmatic Kitty and the rising Joyful Noise in Indianapolis are all putting out strong music on any given month. The latter of those labels mentioned has another solid release coming out next week on August 19th from Bloomington, IN three-piece Sleeping Bag.

Titled Deep Sleep, the band has an interesting dynamic that you don’t see a lot of with drummer Dave Segedy both writing and singing the songs alongside both guitarist Tyler Smith and bassist Glenn Meyers to round out the lineup. While this may invoke thoughts of Phil Collins and the second incarnation of Genesis, Sleeping Bag create music that references rock of the late ’80s and early ’90s such as subdued slacker vocals, masculine bass lines, and swirling yet melodic guitar structures while incorporating both garage and surf. You might even hear a little Blue Album-era in the second half of the LP. But don’t take our word for it, listen to an advance of the entire album below and, if you like what you hear, purchase the album here. We recommend grabbing the limited edition of 500 hand-numbered vinyl on marbled Kelly Green & Aqua Blue vinyl. It is quite nice looking.

I discovered these guys earlier this year and fell in love. The new record is stellar, but I celebrate their entire catalog.
