MOKB Premiere : Overlake : “Disappearing”

The early chapters of Jersey City band Overlake began when members Tom Barrett and Lysa Opfer were in another band. The pair, connected by their mutual love for ’80s/’90s alternative, would stay late after practice having fun with impromptu jam sessions. This eventually lead them to hourly recording sessions and their forthcoming debut LP, Sighs, slated for release on April 15th via Killing Horse Records.

While their drummers have not stuck, their influences clearly have, listing Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, and Pavement as their chief inspirations. Those first two, specifically MBV, are heard loud and clear in the shoegazey “Disappearing.” The burst of guitars at the chorus and hazey vocals of the cut would have fit quite nicely on Loveless and does this without sounding derivative of the era. Stream the song below and catch the band on several dates leading to stops at SXSW in Austin.
