On October 15th, Luke Temple, bandleader for Here We Go Magic, will be releasing a new collection of solo material Good Mood Fool through Secretly Canadian. The album is his first since 2011’s Don’t Act Like You Don’t Care and sees the singer leaning toward a more soulful sound. While the latest single from the release, “Florida,” has a funky, laid-back vibe to it, the story is serious in nature. It was inspired by a close friend of Temple’s awful addiction to cocaine. “My friend was going through a tough time,” he said, “I was feeling for her and wrote this song.”

The cinematic and beautifully shot video for the song was filmed in Belize through the direction of Kris Moyes. It depicts what happens behind the scenes of the drug trade and the injustices that occur with the people of drug-producing countries.

Temple explains, “There have been 70,000+ deaths related to the Mexican drug cartels since 2006. The Unites States is, by far, the largest market for cocaine use in the world with roughly 16% of its population using the drug. New Zealand is second at roughly 4%. Mexico itself hovers around 2%. They supply it, we buy it. Being a musician I have been around my share of the stuff and can say that there is an absolute disconnect from the reality of what is being supported by the purchase of cocaine. Our privilege and relative comfort can make it hard to look outside of our immediate gratification. It seems almost impossible to exist without being an indirect aid to the exploitation of those less fortunate but we can at least start with the glaringly obvious. It’s absolutely not worth just being able to party for another few hours.”
