Coming on the heels of two EP’s (2013’s Hamburg and 2012’s NE Sorrow is Born), former Eagle Seagull frontman Eli Mardock will be releasing his full-length debut, Everything Happens for the First Time, today via Paper Garden Records. The album takes its title from a poem by 20th Century Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges and finds Mardock exploring the darker hues of life, as he explains, “I think the things that are good in us and the things that are dark are what makes us whole. Creating music that is always uplifting is boring in the same way that creating music that is always dark is boring. Life isn’t like that, it is more complicated.”

It is fitting that most of the songs on the LP began when Eagle Seagull were having major label issues. Unlike the previous two solo EPs of Mardock, this album is a Eagle Seagull reunion of sorts with former Eagle Seagull drummer Andrew Tyler and former Eagle Seagull keyboardist/violinist (as well as Mardock’s wife) Carrie Butler being enlisted to assist. From a career perspective, Mardock seems to have come full-circle right down to returning to the label he started off from and in many ways he helped build.
