Throw in Mick Ronson, a glitter-kid spacesuit (with a mouth hole for singing), and a bit more in the way of unforgettable hooks, and I’d think David Bronson’s solo debut was vintage David Bowie. Bronson has it all: the confessional narratives writ larger by dramatic highs and lows. The build-up to rock ‘n’ roll-based payoffs. The inherent sense of textures, beats, and something that can only be described as movement – Story would be perfect for a train ride from a failed relationship into a new life. Oh, and the video below reveals that Bronson even has his own Ronson – I don’t know the name of the guy playing leads, but I’d say he’s a keeper.
The first installment in a series Bronson’s calling The Long Lost Story was purportedly motivated by the musician’s experience of, yes, a failed relationship… that “destabilized Bronson and thrust him into a slate-cleaning, introspective quest.”
I don’t know if anyone’s ever done a poll. But it seems to me that unrequited/lost/f..ked-up love has prompted more great music than tends to emerge from the kissy-happy, puppy dog variety. If Story is just the start of Bronson’s solo musical journey, I have no choice other than to wish for him a sucky love life.
