New Video : The Wombats : 1996

Topping off an already smashing 2011, which saw the drop of their well-received second album The Wombats Proudly Present…This Modern Glitch and a successful run of the summer festival circuit, The Wombats are now releasing a new single 1996 via 14th Floor/Warner Bros. Records. Although frontman Matthew “Murph” Murphy is waxing nostalgic for the relative ease of the mid-90’s, the single 1996 is clearly pining for the 80’s with its dance-rock synths, massive hooks and bouncy choruses. Or maybe it’s Murph’s very upfront, very British vocal delivery that harkens the New Wave ghosts of Echo and The Bunnyman, Talk Talk and The The. But thankfully, despite their new sartorially scuba-themed party video for 1996, The Wombats never let the longing for simpler times get too drippy, what with their frequently tongue-in-cheek lyrics and super-infectious beats.

The Wombats are currently embarking on a sold-out U.K. tour. Dates below.
