New Song : Lydia Loveless : Can’t Change Me

Bloodshot Records has been on something of a roll as of late with releases from the likes of The Bottle Rockets and the Dex Romweber Duo, but the release that has left me the most slackjawed is the latest from Lydia Loveless, Indestructible Machine. You would be forgiven for not being familiar with Ms. Loveless, and given her handle, you might even be forgiven for assuming she was a…ahem…performer in the adult entertainment industry. But rest assured, although she deals with very adult themes, the 21 year-old Columbus native is a dyed-in-the-wool Americana steel-belter, full of piss and vinegar and blessed with a blast-it-to-the-back-of-the-room voice.

Available on September 13th, Indestructible Machine is one great devil of a record, effortlessly meshing country sensibilities with punk attitude. Ms. Loveless might be the love child of Charles Bukowski and Lucinda Williams; a couple listens and you’ll be ripe for a stay in rehab. How Many Women would have been a country radio standard if released four decades ago, and if Jesus Was A Wino doesn’t move the spirit to spirits, nothing will. Oh, and Lydia, I don’t know if the song is fact-based, but thanks for ruining Steve Earle for me.
