New Song : Tom Russell : Mesabi

You may not be familiar with the name Tom Russell, but you damn well outta be. A published author and respected artist, music is Russell’s day job, and the years have seen his songs covered by luminaries with names like Johnny Cash, Dave Van Ronk, Jerry Jeff Walker, Doug Sahm and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Part troubadour, part Beatnik poet, his talent is such that Lawrence Ferlinghetti (he of Go fame) asserts that Russell’s characters capture, “the wounded heart of America.” Not at all insignificant praise.

It’s always an occasion for celebration when Russell elects to release new music, and on September 6th, we’ll be able to get our hands on his latest, Mesabi. Deriving its name from the famous northern Minnesota iron range, Mesabi is a great American rock and roll record from a master craftsman that conjures up ghosts of Jack Kerouac, James Dean, Buddy Holly, Woody Guthrie and hundred nameless drifters on this country’s endless highways. Throw in guest appearances from Lucinda Williams, Van Dyke Parks and the ubiquitous members of Calexico, and you’re left with an impressive, and highly recommended, record.
