New Music : Jared Mees and The Grown Children : Only Good Thoughts Can Stay

Jared Mees and The Grown Children have a new album Only Good Thoughts Can Stay, out on May 10th 2011, on Mees’ own Tender Loving Empire label. From the very first track Limber Hearts, the rollicking, raucous tempos, joyous horns, jangly guitars and life-size melodies have an infectious oomph that uplifts the listener with irrepressible catchiness and positive vibes. But as the album title suggests, it takes a mindful effort to do so. Struggling with perhaps an intrinsically darker outlook, the lyrics tell tales of the constant search for balance and a ray of light, though turbulent, stormy skies are a’ brewin.’ The songs are layered, robust and full of spontaneous twists and spectacular surprises along the way. Tiny Toy Piano effortlessly sways from a tender Latin swing, to a 50’s rocker, before ending in a fervent torch song. Graverobbers smolders like a rockabilly, spaghetti-western barnburner, with a campfire choir backing up the zingy narrative. Shake is a valiant ballad that transcends into a feisty mantra, driven by pounding drums and soaring vocals. The Portland 5-piece including Megan Spear, Javier Madrigal, Quilty Kim and Joe Bowden wrap it up with Hungry Like A Tiger, a heart-swelling, rabble-rousing, optimistic ode to human resiliency. Fans of Sufjan Stevens and The Flaming Lips will find kindred, quirky spirits in JMATGC’s smart, playful, Americana folk-pop. They’ll also find Only Good Thoughts Can Stay is a gutsy, modern-day luminary in these often dark, troubling times.

Caffeine, Alcohol, Sunshine, Money is the jam. Three years later and it’s still on heavy rotation around these parts. Can’t wait for the new one.
