MOKB Holiday Interview Series + New Video : Nicole Atkins

A few months back we primed the Nicole Atkins pump with her winning (albeit gutsy) cover of Can’s classic, Vitamin C.  We’ve dutifully circled the January 25th release date for Mondo Amore, and since you should have already nabbed lead single, we’ve no qualms about sharing the suitably off-kilter video for Vultures. Once Mondo Amore drops, Ms. Atkins has a couple weeks of tough lounging before the wheels roll on her late winter jaunt around North America with neo-gospel folkies, Cotton Jones.

Ms. Atkins was good enough to agree to be subjected to MOKB’s annual holiday grilling, but between you and me, I think she was just looking for an excuse to call out her bother Scotty.

MOKB : Any special musical plans for the Holiday Season? Any specials songs or shows?

Nicole Atkins : Just getting all the artwork for the record package finished hopefully right before Christmas. Also going to be releasing a new video for the song Vultures over the holiday!

MOKB : What project(s) have you been working on lately?

NA : I put together a new lineup for the Black Sea so we’ve been working hard getting ready for tour. I’ve also been doing some guest vocals in the studio for AC Newman and Okkervil River. Other than that, tons of artwork. Drowning in paint.

MOKB : What was your favorite album or musician of 2010?

NA : Tame Impala! Went and saw them two nights in a row here in NYC and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It felt like seeing Pink Floyd back in their heyday. Amazing.

MOKB : What’s the plan for 2011? Any secrets you can divulge? Teasers you can offer up?

NA : Well, my new record Mondo Amore comes out January 25th and we start a headlining tour for it on February 9th. This great band from Maryland, Cotton Jones, is going to be opening up. We’ll just be touring our butts off and releasing a bunch of fun videos my good friends Lucia, Mandy and Roe made. We’re also going to be recording a session at Sun Studios in Memphis so I’m real excited about that.

MP3 : Nicole Atkins : Vitamin C (Can cover)

MOKB : What was the best holiday gift you ever received?

NA : A friend once sent me a box with a snuggie and a bottle of Grey Goose. That was a great gift!

MOKB : What was the worst holiday gift you ever received?

NA : My brother re-gifted the scarf that I gave him two years ago back to me last year. Dick.

MOKB : Favorite holiday movie? song?

NA : Jim Henson’s Emmit Otter’s Jugband Christmas and Oh Holy Night. That song has the best melody. Makes me cry.

MOKB : Any special Holiday shout-outs, ultimatums or threats you like to share in this public forum?

NA : Scotty Atkins….if you re-gift the sweater I gave you last year, back to me this year, I’ll cut you.
