New Song : Nicole Atkins : Vitamin C (Can cover)

I waffle on Nicole Atkins, but when she dredges up a 70s Krautrock cover, well, let’s just say she suddenly becomes a whole lot more appealing to me. Vitamin C has been lifted from Can’s classic third studio record, Ege Bamyasi. The title of the record translates as “Aegean Okra” in Turkish, and is really one of those records that you need to listen to in its entirety at least once, regardless of how much you may loathe it.

But back to Miss Atkins. For starters, she plays it pretty straight here (pumping up the bassline and planing Can’s creeper-coarseness smooth), but overall, her take on Vitamin C isn’t bad. The song is currently available as the B-side of the 7-inch of Vultures, the lead single of her new record, Mondo Amore. Mondo Amore doesn’t drop until January 25th, so while you’re waiting, I recommend doing the following, in order:

  1. Listen to the Nicole Atkins cover of Can’s Vitamin C
  2. Hop over to her website and grab the free download of Vultures
  3. Find a copy of Can’s Ege Bamyasi, pour a stiff drink and give it the old college try

If more people listened to Can, the world would be a better place.

I don’t understand—there are people who don’t like Ege Bamyasi?
