Virginia’s Manorlady are a bunch of busy beavers to be sure. In the next month they’re rolling out two unrelated releases. The first, Ego Oppressor, is the quartet’s second long-player, and comes stacked with a DVD containing a beat-synced video to accompany the band’s sonic armada.

The second, but no less interesting, is Boyhood Freedom. That release is an uber-limited lathe-cut 7″ single from Cellar Hits. Truth be told, you’ll be hardpressed to lay hands on one of these unless you know a guy, if you get my drift, so it seems the least we can do is give you a taste of the band’s woozy swooner.

Portland Singer-Songwriter Michael Gerard Levassear, otherwise known as Michael The Blind, will be releasing his new album, Are’s and Els, on June 5th through Alder Street Records. The album was recorded at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone and features the Magik*Magik Orchestra and Levasseur’s newly formed band The Els. Sympathies was the last track to be included on the album and was written with the idea of having a singalong section of wordless vocals that has turned into singalong with the crowd during live performances.

MOKB is happy to be debuting the Dominic DeJoseph directed video for the track. The video features many NY local artists, comedians, and musicians. Among the individuals cast are Tony Bennett’s granddaughters, photographer Kelsey Bennett, her sister filmmaker/actor Remy Bennett & Remy’s husband Monroe Robertson. Check it out below.

With his brother Ceschi, David Ramos put the Fake Four label – which might just as well be called Mixmaster Central – together (the name may also be familiar to you per its association with Circle Into Square). His new album, Sento La Tua Mancanza, will be available on May 29th. Re: what’s behind the release, FF says, “David Ramos is at war with impermanence. Falling somewhere between concept album and unrepressed journal entry, the album is David’s love letter to another dimension. It is a tale of completely falling apart and forgetting how to live in one’s absence.”

I can relate to a war with impermanence – and to the pain and disorientation that can accompany losing a grandmother (Ramos lost his in 2010). Perhaps not so much to a guy who’s so attached to an Alf doll, but maybe that’s how Ramos is fording the gap. This video was made for the first single from the album. It’s really growing on me.

A while back we opened the book on the awkwardly-named, but mighty talented Plates Of Cake. Lead singer Jonathan Byerley dropped us a line yesterday to let us know he has packed up his guitar, his uber-literate musings and his noteworthy croon, and set off on his inaugural solo voyage. Catherine Market, available on July 10th from La Société Expéditionnaire, is a bit of a throwback; a singer-songwriter record that eschews many of the pitfalls that drag the genre into the quagmire of cliche.

Catherine Market finds Byerley returning to his childhood home state of Colorado, a far cry from Byerley’s current Brooklyn home. Holed up in Boulder, Colorado at Rockbox Analog Fidelity, he stretches his songs into heretofore unimagined territories, with a baritone that splits the difference between Mark Knopfler and Matt Berninger. Lead single I Still Pull the Silver (From the Penny Drawer) is a slow-buzzin’ stream of consciousnous smiler sure to find favor with fans of Leonard Cohen, Lambchop and Dylan’s “dream” songs. Now if we can just figure out what the title means.
