Premiere : Tyler Childers singing “Honky Tonk Flame” at Sun King Brewery

We’ve been excited proponents of the movement back towards old school and outlaw country. Artists like Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton have brought back authenticity and much-needed real-life grit to country music. This resurgence has now brought forth a second generation, if you will, to get very excited about, and Tyler Childers is a fellow Kentuckian that certainly fits that description. Childers was born in Lawrence County, Kentucky, a small, dwindling coal mining area in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, so he knows more than a little bit about struggle and underbelly of lawlessness and booze that is glossed over by the thick fog of religion in these poor, rural areas.

The new 10-song album, Purgatory, recorded at Nashville’s The Butcher Shoppe studio, was produced by Sturgill Simpson as well as David Ferguson. It features Simpson on acoustic guitar and to no surprise a host of world-renowned players (Stuart Duncan, Miles Miller, and Russ Pahl, among others).

Lucky Indianapolis show-goers can catch Childers this Saturday at the Sun King Brewery VIII Anniversary party, which also features Nikki Lane and Parker Milsap! Tickets available at MOKB

Toro y Moi Announces New LP, Unveils Video for “Girl Like You”

 photo toroymoi2_zpsy6qdqzmw.png

One of the hardest workers and true chameleons in the game, Chaz Bear (fka Bundick) releasing his fifth studio, named Boo Boo, album under the Toro y Moi moniker on July 7th via Carpark Records. The album was recorded over the last year in Portland, Oregon during a trying time for the multi-talented artist. The following is a personal statement from the man himself about the LP:

After 7 years of touring and recording, I found myself becoming self conscious about my position in life as a “famous” person, or at least my version of whatever that is. My dreams had become my reality, yet I was somehow unable to accept this new environment. I couldn’t help but fall into what might be described as an identity crisis. A feedback loop of fearful thoughts left me feeling confused. I felt as though I no longer knew what it was that I actually wanted and needed in and out of life, and at times I felt unable to even tell what was real.

During this time of personal turmoil, I turned to music as a form of therapy, and it helped me cope with the pain that I was feeling. I’d listen to the same ambient song over and over again, trying to insulate myself from reality. I fell in love with space again.

By the time I felt ready to begin working on a new record, I knew that this idea of space within music would be something that propelled my new work forward. The artists that were influencing what I was making included everyone from Travis Scott to Daft Punk, Frank Ocean to Oneohtrix Point Never, Kashif and Gigi Masin. I recognized that the common thread between these artists was their attention to a feeling of space, or lack thereof. I decided that I wanted to make a Pop record with these ideas in mind. That idea for a record is what eventually became Boo Boo.

Below is a visual for the melodic first single “Girl Like You.” Pre-order the release on all formats here.

Sheer Mag Stream Title Track to New Album Need to Feel Your Love

 photo sheermag_zpsijuakrbw.jpg

While the title track to Sheer Mag’s debut LP, Need to Feel Your Love, might have been inspired by Al Green, we can’t help but hear some major early Michael Jackson vibes in it as well. The song fully showcased the versatility in singer Tina Halladay’s outstanding, raw delivery. She says the inspiration behind the song comes from “when you get to the point of a romantic relationship and you feel as if you have done everything to give that person a chance to make the most out of it and you are at the breaking point and you NEED them to do something more, even if you don’t exactly know that is.” While we have not heard the whole album yet, this song along with previously heard “Just Can’t Get Enough” has us pretty confident this will be a good one. Pre-order for the vinyl is available here.

Alvvays Announce New Album, Stream “In Undertow”

 photo alvvays_zpsmd7dnxzz.jpg

Alvvays is due to release its second full-length, Antisocialites, September 8th via Polyvinyl. Expect more lovelorn sun-spotted jangly jams done in only the charming way the Toronto quartet know how. According to lead singer Molly Rankin, “The record is a fantasy breakup arc and my life nearly imitated art.” The first cut from the release is the breakup track “In Undertow” full of introspective witty lyrics floating over top rolling waves of guitar reverb. Pre-order for the release is available here.
