New Video + Tour Dates : Brent Amaker & The Rodeo : Man In Charge

Austin, hide your women, children and any ruminants who may dress like they’re asking for it. Country killers Brent Amaker and The Rodeo have the van packed and their mustaches waxed. These Seattle polecats will soon have SXSW under siege with their delightfully trashy roadhouse odes and tales of backroom debauchery. If you’re in the neighborhood, and yet to bear witness to this Stetsoned Sodom and Gomorrah, you really owe it to yourself to check out Amaker and his posse. But exercise extreme caution, because songs like Man In Change and Sissy New Age Cowboy are catchier than a Tijuana toilet seat.

New Song + Video : Royal Forest : You’re A Big Girl Now (Bob Dylan cover)

Psych-poppers Royal Forest are one of those lucky bands for whom SXSW represents home field advantage. Their tuneful self-titled EP is currently available free-of-charge; it’s a highly textured affair that will likely appeal to psych fans who don’t like their trips quite as intense as those doled out by acts like BRMC and fellow Austinites, The Black Angels.

Sadly, the EP doesn’t contain Royal Forest’s rather inspired take on Bod Dylan’s You’re A Big Girl Now, the video for which we’re pleased to premiere here. The clip was shot in a pasture in Golinda, TX, and the whole ball of wax was decomposed in post-production through repeated overdubs on a dying VCR. The final product speaks for itself.

New Song + Tour Dates : Ted Russell Kamp : California Wildflower

One of the things I’m most looking forward to about SXSW (besides copious tacos, BBQ and booze) is the chance to see a number of artists, whose records I really dig, but for some reason, rarely make it up here onto the tundra. Ted Russell Kamp is right on there on that list. The long-time Shooter Jennings’ sideman is an accomplished solo artist in his own right, responsible for a number of Shooter’s most-loved tunes (Steady At The Wheel anyone?) as well as a handful of stellar rock-leaning country records that Nashville wouldn’t dare sniff.

His latest, Get Back To The Land, is reportedly his most diverse to date and boosts a nice list of guest artists, incluing Angelo Moore (Fishbone), Eric Heywood (Son Volt, Ray LaMontagne), Tony Gilkyson (Lone Justice, X) and Robby Turner (Waylon Jennings and the Highwaymen). Sadly, the record won’t hit American shores until May 10th, but European fans are snapping it up like day-old pastries as witnessed by his #1 position on the Euro-Americana charts this past January. So, while we wait, here’s a sample of Get Back To The Land, lead single California Wildflower.

New Band Smell : Ex Cops

More than a little buzz forming around Brooklyn-based Ex Cops, a new project from ex-HYMNS frontman, Brian Harding. Harding is assembling a live unit and concurrently putting the finishing touches on the low wine of this project, White Women EP, which we’re working under the assumption will include the Radiohead-esque Black Helicopters.

If you’re Austin-bound, be aware that Ex Cops third ever show will be going down March 15th at Swan Dive. I suspect people are already starting to queue up, so you may want to get a move on.

New Song + Video : The Silos : White Vinyl

Once upon a time there was a little record called Cuba by a little band known as The Silos, that completely changed the way I thought about music. Almost quarter of a century later, I still listen to that record, and we’re still lucky enough to have The Silos, or at the very least, Walter Salas-Humara’s latest re-invention of the legendary unit.

You’d be hard pressed to find a lesser known band with as many great songs as The Silos, but I reckon that’s just the way life is. And it’s not as if Salas-Humara is throwing in the towel any time soon. According to the man himself, their newest, Florizona, is their best to date. Two long years in the making, it will finally fall to earth on April 20th, bringing with it ten songs of peerless Americana-flavored rock in the vein of Alejandro Escovedo or Los Lobos. And if you’re SXSW-bound, you’ll have the opportunity to witness new tracks like White Vinyl (check out the awesome Richard Linklater/Dazed And Confused-inspired video below) rub elbows with classics like Tennessee Fire and She Lives Up The Street.

The Silos at SXSW
3/15 @ The ND at 501 Studios
3/16 @ The Dogwood (former Mother Egan’s Location) – The Guitartown/Conqueroo Party
3/19 @ Rainey Manor – The Baltimore House Party

New Video : Belleruche : 3 Amp Fuse

We’ve been keeping tabs on Londoners Belleruche since before they dropped 270 Stories, a record that is pricking up ears across the Atlantic, but still treading water here in the colonies. In an attempt to change that, the band will be dipping their toes into SXSW this year, right in time to coincide with the album’s third single, 3 Amp Fuse. 3 Amp Fuse is a taunt groovin’ tune that highlights the band’s R&B chops, and of course, their penchant for making cherry videos.
