New Song : M83 : Midnight City

M83 returns this year with a new two-LP set entitled Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming! Few albums, in the last few years, have had as much staying power with me as 2008’s Saturdays=Youth, so to say I’m excited is an understatement. This new cut, “Midnight City“, is an exciting, pulsing jam to say the least and only fuels that fire.

Last year, M83 talked to Pitchfork about the new songs, “For now, the direction of the album is very, very, very epic. Very orchestrated. I feel like it’s a mix of all my albums, actually.” He went on to cite the Smashing Pumpkins’ 1995 double album Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness as a key influence: “I saw when I was a teenager that I could dig into [the album]. It was like a treasure. If I were a teenager nowadays, I would try to find something as creative as this album. They had so much to say in their songs.”

MP3 Premiere : Peter Wolf Crier : Right Away

MOKB Presents hosted a really excellent night of music last Fall that featured Minneapolis duo Peter Wolf Crier. The live show was tight and engaging, filled with songs from the band’s debut release Inter-Be. PWC announced today that they will release their follow-up, entitled Garden of Arms this September 6th through Jagjaguwar. The band created this album during a short break from touring (over 100 shows in six months!). The eleven tracks were recorded by Peter Pisano and Brian Moen in Moen’s own home with the help of engineer Adam Krinsky. The duo states that these songs reflect a “new-found footing of confidence and experimentation.”

This first cut, “Right Away,” is a rich melodic soundscape – layered with harmonies and perfectly-timed percussive elements.

Free Mixtape : YACHT : Science Fiction You Can Dance To

A few months back, Miss Dolly Mod hipped you to the June 21st release of Shangri-La, the latest/greatest from Portland, Oregon’s electro-popper, YACHT. Hopefully you’re enjoying lead single, Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire), but if you’re in the market for something new from the YACHT camp, here’s the best we can do.

The band’s Claire L. Evans has meticulously assembled a mixtape homage combining two of YACHT’s passions: science fiction and esoteric dance music. The result is Science Fiction You Can Dance To, an hour of dark matter movers and celestial shakers, available now from Boing Boing. No word on how long this baby will be available, so if there’s a Star Wars cantina-themed soiree in your future, I recommend you jump on it now.

Download Science Fiction You Can Dance To here, and don’t forget Shangri-La is out June 21st on DFA?

MOKB Interviews : The Rosebuds

[image title=”rosebuds” size=”full” id=”19927″ align=”center” linkto=”full” ]

When Kelly Crisp sings, “I wanna feel something way out here. I need something to happen now, even if it fucks me up… Come visit me way out here. I need you to see me, even if it makes it worse,” it might just make you shiver — you know that feeling. We all do — agonizing over lost love, knowing a phone call might be a quick fix for what seems like a chronic condition.

The track, Come Visit Me, is one of the more wrenching cuts from The Rosebuds’ latest record Loud Planes Fly Low, and it’s among good company — the album was written and recorded following the break-up of Crisp and co-Rosebud Ivan Howard. At times, it seems almost invasive to hear these 10 tracks, all wounded, haunting and redemptive guitar pop. But out of heartbreak comes hope — and Crisp is the first to say it. Before Loud Planes Fly Low drops on Merge on June 7, Crisp told MOKB about how the album brought her back to earth. (more…)
