MOKB INFLNCD Mixtape #2 : TOPS

 photo topsinflncd_zps3a609eda.png

Montreal’s TOPS formal debut in 2012, Tender Opposites, introduced them to the world, but latest LP, Picture You Staring, showcases them as not just an up and coming act, but one that has already arrived. The lush, sometimes romantic arrangements spanning several decades and genres create a sparkling collection of songs that are as timeless as they are quintessentially current. The album is sure to finish high on many best of lists, including ours for 2014.

Tonight, MOKB is proud to be bringing the band in along with Wampire for what is sure to be one of the most enjoyable double headers this year. To coincide with the show, the band has presented us with the second edition of our artist-curated INFLNCD Mixtape series where they highlight music and other artists that have impacted their sound and general aesthetic. Selections include pianist/composer Bill Pursell and the title track of his 1963 album Our Winter Love, Japanese nu-jazz artist DJ Takmura’s “Harmonium”, and our personal favorite early ’80s Bangor Wales’ band Fay Ray and their song “Cold As Steel”, among so much more. The mixtape sets the perfect mood for the heavy overcast and rainy days that tend occur this time of year. Stream and download it below and purchase tickets for the show tonight here.

MOKB INFLNCD Mixtape #1 : Phoria

 photo unnamed_zps62f9578f.png

Music isn’t always about the latest and greatest. What is old to one generation is new to the next. So we thought what better way to discover new (and old) music than to ask some of our favorite artists currently to create a mixtape of songs and artists that influenced what they are aesthetically and sonically. With that idea in mind, MOKB is proud to introduce a new mixtape series we have dubbed INFLNCD.

The first band to contribute is Brighton, UK five-piece Phoria. Earlier this year, they released one our favorite collections of music with their Display EP (stream here) via X Novo. While many of the selections are not necessarily all that surprising given their textured, falsetto-led compositions, they did throw in some excellent lesser known entities such as late ’90s, early aughts English six-piece The Cooper Temple Clause, one-time Sparklehorse member Sophie Michalitsianos aka Sol Seppy, and Buckinghamshire singer Martin Grech. The result is fusion of lush soundscapes that flows seamlessly from start to finish and sure to fit in well during your next moment of introspection. Find the downloadable Soundcloud stream along with tracklist below and purchase their highly recommended Display EP here.

Tracklist:
1: Mew – Comforting Sound
2: Aphex Twin – Windowlicker
3: Cooper Temple Clause – Music Box

7: Martin Grech – Open Heart Zoo
8: Bjork – Joga

10: Elbow – Puncture Repair
