Session : Sturgill Simpson at Sun King Brewery

It’s been amazing, and exciting, to see this surge of mainstream critical and media attention for Sturgill Simpson and his awesome 2014 release, Metamodern Sounds In Country Music.

About a year and a half ago, someone sent us a link to an emerging honky tonk artist and told us we wouldn’t be sorry if we checked him out. We don’t do much country, but this is GOOD COUNTRY. You know, the kind cut from the same mold as Waylon, Willie, and Johnny. We sent it to our buds at Sun King Brewery, and they were just as excited as we were!  So, we locked him in to headline Sun King’s 4 year anniversary event “SKB IV” on July 6 of 2013. We couldn’t wait though, so we invited him up to Indianapolis to play a First Friday show at our then venue, the Do317 Lounge. It was everything we hoped it would be -outlaw, gritty, country-rock with a shot of bourbon (no rocks). Before the lounge show, we invited Sturgill and his band over to Sun King to film a private MOKB/Sun King Session. Amidst a wall of Cream Ale cans, he and his band delivered one of our favorite sessions to date. We have to say we were also pretty stoked to find out Sturgill has been a reader of My Old Kentucky Blog for some time. We’re glad he gave up the railroad and got back to writin’ songs. There is something here for sure. Something I think any music lover (country or not) can appreciate. Make sure you pick up Metamodern Sounds In Country Music, and come see him live at MOKB Presents Sturgill Simpson at The Vogue Theatre on December 7th if you’re in town.

November 5th : Rock-It-To-A-Cure for JDRF

I lost my older brother to juvenile diabetes five years ago. It was a painful process to watch Chris degrade and finally pass due to complications from the disease. To help others, and raise continued awareness, MOKB & MOKB Presents have proudly partnered to make the upcoming Rock-It-To-A-Cure charity event & concert a success. This annual rockfest features bands and musicians coming together to perform for a common cause – to raise money for JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation) – and to help educate about Type I diabetes.

Rock-It-To-A-Cure will take place November 5th at the Old National Centre in the Murat Egyptian Room. General Admission tickets are $10 and include access to the Family Zone (featuring family fun and a live animal show by Silly Safaris at 4:30 pm). VIP Packages are available for $25.

•3:30 – Doors Open
•3:30 – 6:00: Family Fun Zone
•3:30 – 10:00: Vendor/Exhibitor Zone
•4:30 – 6:00: VIP Reception
•6:30 – 10:00: Concert

New Song : Brown Bird : End Of Days

We are really digging on Brown Bird and are excited to welcome them to Indianapolis on November 5th, at Radio Radio, when they come to town with The Devil Makes Three. I’m racking up the views of their recent session video performance of “Bilgewater.”

We’ve also got a new cut called “End Of Days,” from the duo’s upcoming release, Salt For Salt, which drops on Oct. 18th.

Yuck on Room 205 + MOKB Presents Yuck at Radio Radio on 10/1/11

Have you had your rock fix today? What about that craving for those 90’s childhood days of yore? You remember those, don’t you? That forgotten age when mp3s, smartphones, HD and BluRay were undreamed nuggets not yet in the brains of the best R & D minds. You heard Beavis and Butthead are making their triumphant return to that one station that played images of bands right on your cathode ray box long ago, right? It’s been what, 16 years?! Maybe the world has changed after all. Maybe life is exactly as it was 20 years ago. I mean, you still look the same, right? Boy, do I have news for you! I have hard evidence of rock and roll that is alive and well. Yuck! This is a good thing. Oh, and you can watch Yuck actually perform. The audio is matched up with this visual presentation, and you can actually experience music with your ears and eyes. Here’s the best part: they play multiple songs (one is a ten minute hazy, guitar eruption called “Rubber”) in this slapdash, wickedly designed room, and Yuck is the centerpiece in a shrine to all those things you love most – VHS tapes (!!!), public access television and a (mostly) naked dead-stare muse! If you’ve been begging some deity to take you back to simpler times, you should think about thanking Yuck and Room 205 for returning you to the world you know and love.

Room 205 is a music and film collaboration sharing a passion for the arts that have inspired them. For Yuck’s Room 205 visit, Michael Reich directed, Forrest Borie edited, Tamarra Younis designed the set and Ariela Marin starred as the muse.

Yuck’s self-titled album is out now on Fat Possum records. Do yourself a favor and buy it now. And, buy yourself a ticket to their October 1 MOKB Presents visit to Radio Radio in Indianapolis while you’re at it. Long live the cassette!

I don’t know why, maybe their Midwestern roots or their catchy songs, but MOKB has always has a soft spot for Cincinnati’s Pomegranates. We were excited to learn that a planned 7”, announced a few month back, had morphed into a 12” double-EP.

The new double EP is titled In Your Face Thieves/Chestnut Attic and contains 10 new tracks. It was released this week via Lujo Records. It is available in vinyl and digital formats. The band gave us a track from each EP, “Softness” and “Morroco Girl“, for your listening/downloading pleasure.
