Indianapolis-based psych/power-pop band S.M. Wolf have recently released their sophomore album Bad Ocean through PIAPTK Records. The band, led by elementary school teacher Adam Gross, has been impressing midwest audiences since 2015 and create an updated sound comparable to many mid-to-late-90s alt-rockers, like Weezer, Ozma, and Nada Surf. You can check the album’s lead single, “The Station” below, and stream all of Bad Ocean on Spotify.

Jim James (of My Morning Jacket) // Throwback

 photo JimJames_UniformDistortion_zps0xfhxzrt.jpg

My Morning Jacket’s Jim James will release his latest solo album “Uniform Distortion” on June 29th. Yesterday, James released the second single from the album, “Throwback“. It follows “Just A Fool“. “Throwback” is a track that MMJ has actually been playing, as a band, here and there for a couple years, so it is interesting to see it released as a solo work. In an Instagram post, James wrote:

i wrote this song doing pretty much what you are probably doing right at this very second: scrolling thru social media. it struck me as SO wild- how, as you scroll back in time thru someone’s account you watch their face grow younger…but as you do this REAL TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!! the clock is ticking…instead of doing good work or creating love or taking a walk in nature i am here STARING AT MY FUCKING PHONE!!!! ha ha ha. don’t get me wrong- social media is an amazing tool…but i think we should look at it more like a tool, like a hammer you pick up for a little while to do a job, and then you PUT IT DOWN. you don’t sit there and keep hammering away or else pretty soon your entire world would be destroyed and fall apart! and i feel like that is exactly what is happening right before our very eyes to this precious real beautiful human-filled earth. so lets WAKE EACH OTHER UP PEOPLE! lets stand up against injustice and use this tool of social media to fight for peace and love and equality! let’s throwback for a minute but try and live in the NOW for a better future.

Matthew Sweet // New Album + Show at HiFi

 photo MSweet_TD_zpsy2bp6fk9.png

After taking six years off, Matthew Sweet has kicked it into gear. Last year, he released a 17-song double album titled Tomorrow Forever via his own Honeycomb Hideout label, and followed it with a large tour, skipping Indianpolis. He returns, this year, with a new album titled Tomorrow’s Daughter, and an extensive tour, this time including Indy and a date at our venue, the HiFi.

Sweet believes he is in the midst of a musical and career renaissance…

When I was young, the artists that I really admired were the ones who always found a way to keep making music and expressing themselves. To me, those guys were the real artists, and I’ve tried to hold on to that attitude in my own work. This feels like a really good time for me, and I feel lucky and grateful to still be doing what I love to do. When I meet young people and they ask for advice about a career in music, I always say, ‘Do music because it’s what you love to do, and because you’d do it no matter what happens.’I’ve tried to keep that attitude about it, because that’s always worked for me. I just try to keep doing my thing and keep believing.

Trevor Powers // Playwright

 photo YouthLagoon_zps0x6rzumy.jpg

Trevor Powers sunset his Youth Lagoon project back in 2016 and, upon conclusion of his tour that year, dropped out. He has now resurfaced, ready for a fresh start, under his born name with a new song and video and the announcement of the launch of his own label, Baby Halo. Powers also shared the above note, further explaining his retirement from Youth Lagoon.

This new song, “Playwright,” is a beauty, as is the video. The song floats along with brief moments of intensity featuring Trevor’s vocals above asian-inflected orchestration and electronic sonic alterations.

The video, featuring famed synchronized swimming outfit the Aqualillies and directed by Dan Opsal, showcases the mysteriously masked, billowy figures intertwining, trapped in a deep blue underwater setting, and seems to visually articulate Powers’ views on this former project.

“I ended Youth Lagoon because it became a mental dungeon, & I was its captive,” Powers explains. “My intention was never to keep it going — only to serve as a nod to the blooming years. It’s been said the worst prisons are the ones we build for ourselves / the barriers, rules, & regulations that we choose to live by out of fear of the unknown or because we think it’s what we’re supposed to do. But I now feel freed. This project is the beginning of something new; not the continuation of something old.”
